Cruz de Piedra
· Virgen de la Sierra is a cooperative, formed by more than 50 vine growers.
· Calatayud is a small country town in Aragón.
· The winery has invested in a new programme of stainless steel tanks, new presses and a new bottling line to better enable us to capture the intense fruit and terroir of the vineyards.
· This co-operative owns 650 hectares of prime vineyards.
· All the vines are worked by hand during the warm and dry summers, followed by, long cool autumns.
· 80% of the vines are more than 50 years old and are located between 650 and 850 metres on the hills around Calatayud.
· Grapes: Garnacha for red and rose wines & Macabeo (AKA – Viura) for white wines.
· At 1.000 mts. altitude and hidden in the hills, these vineyards have already started the process of becoming “organic vineyards”. There are 3 phases of “reconverting the vineyards into organic vineyards” and the first one is now complete. The 2011 vintage will be the first of our “Wines proceeding from organic vineyards”.
· The climate is semi-arid with cold winters and the risk of frost.
