D.O. Cariñena
This cooperative has today approximately 280 members and 1,700 hectares of vines cultivated. It has accomplished in recent years many investments, amongst which are new pneumatic presses and an important increase in the number of barrels owned.
The red wines traditionally produced are made from the Garnacha, Tempranillo and Cariñena grapes. For some years now Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are also cultivated to a lesser degree. Altitude plays a role in the viticulture as Macabeo grapes (for white wines) and Garnacha (reds) are sourced mainly from vineyards above the Village of Almonacid, at about 600 m altitude, while Tempranillo and Cariñena are sourced from vineyards underneath the village. Many of these vines are over 50 years old and therefore some of oldest vines in the D.O. Cariñena are dedicated to making these wines.
The meagre soils and cold winters, together with a dry, warm and windy continental climate in summer is important; in summer important temperature differences between day and night contribute to good quality grapes.
The wines carry the name of the Marqués de Almonacid, a man whose descendants governed the Almonacid region up to the year 1812 as so-called "Señorios" (land count). The Marqués rebuilt the cultural, social and economical life of the village of Almonacid de la Sierra where the winery is located and where the cultivation of vines and ceramic art were the principal activities. The castle of the Marqués de Almonacid is one of the oldest in Aragón, (also of Navarra and Castilla y León) and was built by the Moors between the 11 and 12
century and later expanded.
